What is VenaSeal?

VenaSeal is a minimally invasive nonthermal treatment for vein disease and varicose veins. The VenaSeal procedure delivers a small amount of a specially formulated medical adhesive to seal the diseased vein, rerouting blood to nearby healthy veins and providing symptom relief. The VenaSeal closure system is a safe and effective treatment, offering significant improvement in quality of life.

Benefits of VenaSeal

  • Simple outpatient procedure
  • Lasting results-94.6% closure rate at five years
  • Compression stockings may not be needed after the procedure
  • Faster recovery time, less pain and bruising than thermal ablation
  • No tumescent anesthesia

How to Prepare for VenaSeal

  • Wear loose and comfortable clothing to your appointment, especially around the legs. This will make it easier to access the treatment area and keep you comfortable afterward.
  • Stay hydrated in the days leading up to your treatment.
  • Avoid applying lotion or oil to your legs two days before your appointment.
  • Feel free to eat a meal before you come in. Since VenaSeal doesn’t require general anesthesia, there’s no need to fast.
  • Let us know about any medications you’re currently taking, including blood thinners and over-the-counter supplements.
  • Plan for a short walk afterward. You’ll be encouraged to walk right after treatment, so wearing comfortable shoes is a good idea.

What Happens During VenaSeal

Before the procedure begins, the board-certified vein doctor will numb the site where the doctor will access your vein.

  • Step 1: Using an ultrasound, the doctor will position a catheter into the diseased vein through a small access site.
  • Step 2: A specially formulated adhesive is placed in the diseased vein via the catheter.
  • Step 3: External pressure is lightly applied to adhere the vein walls together. This is repeated for the length of the vein.
  • Step 4: The catheter is removed, and a single adhesive bandage is applied to the vein access site.

What Happens After VenaSeal

After your VenaSeal treatment, you will be able to get up and walk around right away and get back to your regular routine. You may notice some tenderness and swelling that goes away on its own. Because there are fewer entry points than with other treatments, bruising may be less noticeable, but it can still be an effect of the treatment.

Post-Treatment Care:

  • Walk every day to keep your blood flowing. Short and frequent walks are especially helpful.
  • Avoid heavy lifting for about a week after your treatment.
  • Skip hot baths and saunas, or prolonged soaking.
  • Watch for any unusual symptoms and call us with any concerns.
  • Keep all of your follow-up appointments, even if you are feeling great.
