What does it mean to be ABVLM Board Certified?
The American Board of Venous & Lymphatic Medicine (ABVLM) sets high standards and requirements for physicians who diagnose and treat venous and lymphatic disorders including varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency, and other vein diseases.
Less than 1% of vein care professionals in the US and Canada have achieved the certification from ABVLM. To become an ABVLM diplomat, an applicant must complete intensive training and gain experience in vein treatments, meet the continuing medical education requisites and pass a stringent certification exam.
Physicians must continue to demonstrate competency to maintain the certification in four areas of assessment: evidence of professional standing, evidence of commitment to lifelong-learning and periodic self-assessment, evidence of cognitive expertise, and evaluation of performance in practice.
Why is ABVLM important?
ABVLM is founded with the purpose to improve the standards of vein providers and the quality of vein care for patients. Though doctors can treat varicose veins, without this achievement, your risk of encountering complications such as deep vein thrombosis, blood clots, etc., will be much higher with a doctor who does not specialize in veins. In addition, due to their lack of experience and training, some of these doctors may not be able to diagnose the underlying vein disease and provide timely treatments.
The examination by ABVLM is the most comprehensive test of vein disease knowledge available. Physicians certified in Venous and Lymphatic Medicine have met these rigorous requirements. You can be reassured that you will receive the highest quality of venous care from a board-certified vein doctor.
Why should I seek vein treatment from an ABVLM Certified Specialist?
ABVLM certification sets a distinction between specialists who are dedicated to vein care and physicians who meet the minimal requirement of vein treatment.
Vein disease, without timely treatment, can worsen over time and pose life-threatening health issues. Early treatment from a vein specialist who is highly skilled can help you get back to healthy legs.
