Varicose Veins

Symptom of Vein Disease

Over 40 million people in the United States have varicose veins, which are caused by the pooling of blood in the veins when valves become weakened or damaged. This happens most frequently in the legs since blood is forced to travel uphill against gravity, increasing pressure on the veins. Varicose veins are often genetic but can be caused by pregnancy, extra body weight, hormones, sitting or standing for extended periods, sun damage and excess pressure on the veins.

Many people are bothered strictly by the appearance of varicose veins, but symptoms can include pain, leg cramps, discomfort, swelling, heaviness, itching and skin discoloration.  While most people associate varicose veins with the purple, ropey veins that can be easily seen under the skin, some veins lie deep beneath the skin’s surface and are not visible. Pay attention to symptoms such as leg pain and heaviness even if you do not see varicose veins. While rare, complications can occur especially with deeper veins, including blood clots, bleeding and ulcers. If you are dealing with symptoms that are limiting your activity, please talk to a physician at Physicians Vein Clinics as we specialize only in vein disorders and are here to help you.

While many varicose veins can be managed through conservative therapies such as exercise, a healthy diet, compression stockings and elevating the legs, many people feel self-conscious and uncomfortable living with visible varicose veins. Some people stop wearing shorts and bathing suits and avoid activities like swimming altogether. At Physicians Vein Clinics, we feel that confidence and remaining active are a valuable part of your quality of life, and we are ready to help reduce or eliminate the appearance of varicose veins through minimally invasive procedures performed on an outpatient basis. These treatments include (link to each): Endovenous Laser Ablation, Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation, Ambulatory Phlebectomy, Varithena and Sclerotherapy.
