Spider Veins

Symptom of Vein Disease

Spider veins are similar to varicose veins but appear smaller and closer to the surface of the skin, usually flat or just slightly raised. They are known as spider veins because of their network of short, jagged lines resembling spider webs. Like varicose veins, these are caused by a pooling of blood when valves are weakened or damaged.

Up to 90% of people with spider veins have a family history of them, and they tend to be more evident in women than men. Some women acquire spider veins during pregnancy due to excess body weight and increased blood flow. These veins often disappear after pregnancy but they can be permanent. Spider veins can become more noticeable with age or weight gain, and sun damage can be a factor.

The tiny blood vessels often appear on legs, thighs, ankles, or in some cases, the face, and they are generally red, blue, or purple. They are almost always painless but can be a cosmetic nuisance. Simple outpatient procedures such as sclerotherapy or laser treatments are used to reduce or eliminate the appearance of spider veins at Physicians Vein Clinics, where physicians specialize in venous disorders. A consultation with one of our doctors will help you understand your treatment options and expectations.
