Q & A with the Docs: EVRF & EVLA Differences + Compression Stockings
We offer a variety of procedures to ablate veins here at Physicians Vein Clinics and we certainly get asked about each of them often. Two that commonly get confused and asked about are endovenous radiofrequency ablation (EVRF) and endovenous laser ablation (EVLA). We also get many questions about compression stockings, so we have Dr. Gavin answering 2 commonly asked questions on those topics.
Q: What is the difference between EVRF and EVLA?
A: Endovenous radiofrequency ablation (EVRF) and endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) are 2 types of endovenous thermal ablation (EVTA). They are both techniques used to collapse abnormal veins using heat. Each utilizes a thin catheter to deliver heat to the inner lining of the vein, thereby stopping abnormal blood flow. They are equally effective with a 95% success rate. The difference lies in the type of energy used. Radiofrequency and laser are the two types of heat-producing energy.
Q: When can I stop wearing the compression stockings after my EVRF?
A: After your procedure, a compression stocking will be applied. Wear the stocking around the clock for 48 hours (sleep in it for 2 nights). Thereafter, wear the stocking during waking hours for 5 more days (7 days of stockings TOTAL). You do not need to wear stockings while showering. After 7 days, you may continue to wear your stocking if you wish to do so for comfort and/or swelling.
